Genealogy

The Sparta Public Library has a genealogy collection available for those interested in both local family genealogy and as well as general genealogy research. The collection also features several pieces of local history, and is a great stop for learning more about Sparta!

The library also offers access to a state-of-the-art microfilm machine, and has several years of the Sparta News-Plaindealer on microfilm rolls.

The Sparta Public Library offers free and open access to its digitized collection of historical newspapers, providing an invaluable educational resource for researchers, genealogists, and community members interested in exploring Sparta’s collective history. In partnership with Advantage Archives, the library has digitized a significant number of pages spanning from 1878 to 2015. This initiative underscores a shared responsibility to preserve and make accessible the firsthand accounts and perspectives that document history as it happened.
